Making music among friends: Once again, Martha Argerich invites her large family of musicians, including friends and long-time companions, to be her resident artist at the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. At over 80 years of age, Argerich still exudes irrepressible energy: the festival includes a total of eleven concerts. In addition to Mischa Maisky, Daniel Barenboim, Daniil Trifonov and Elena Bashkirova, the fadista Carminho and the Indian singer Kaushiki Chakraborty are also taking part.
Two visions, two peak works, here pointing to heaven, there the abyss of the Last Judgment in front of our eyes: Both visionaries, Beethoven and Berlioz, are united by their music, which is deeply dedicated to the human. Both have created enormously powerful plays of color that are overwhelming and at the same time inspire the imagination. A fascinating juxtaposition in this opening night of the Martha Argerich Festival.

Beethoven's sky-high choral fantasy – also known as the “Little Ninth” – with its fantastic piano part pays homage to “the harmonies of our lives” and sweeps every human soul with its jubilation. Berlioz' exuberantly fantastic lovesickness symphony releases all passions until only one thing remains from the despair of unrequited love: violent alienation up to the grandiose »Witches' Sabbath«. An early summer night as a fantasy fantastique: A Martha Argerich Festival could hardly start more rousingly.
Please note: The originally planned program with Anne Schwanewilm's and Arnold Schönberg's »Erwartung« will be replaced. The first half now features Ludwig van Beethoven's fantasy for piano, choir and orchestra with Martha Argerich and the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Choir Hamburg.
