Andreas Schmidt calls "time out" on farting audiences

by Tony Magee, edited and expanded from a brief article by Norman Lebrecht on Slipped Disc.

German classical bass-baritone Andreas Schmidt, editor of German website klassik-begeistert.de, politely asks all those responsible – from the senator to the artistic director – for music evenings without “burping and farting” in the most expensive concert hall in the world - the Elbphilharmonie.

Bass-Baritone Andreas Schmidt

Elbphilharmonie, whose artistic director is the the Austrian Christoph Lieben-Seutter is also General Manager of the Laeiszhalle, both based in Hamburg, positions he has held since 2007. His contract was extended in 2022 until the end of the 2028/2029 season.

Artistic director of Elbphilharmonie, Christoph Lieben-Seutter

Elbphilharmonie, is financed solely by Hamburg’s taxpayers.

Certainly the Hamburg taxpayers didn’t spend their good money on noise and embarrassment in the Great Hall. The solution is very simple: a clear address for uninformed concertgoers.

Andreas Schmidt pleads: “You only have one choice, dear Herr Lieben-Seutter: you decide in favour of culture and against the stupidity and dullness of the ignorant. Against a pseudo-democratic (anti-social) minority acceptance that spoils the evening for the vast majority, which generates most of the proceeds. But since when has the loud, belching minority dictated how the music plays to the culture-loving majority?”

Sleep Token gig disrupted by absolutely sinister fart. Moment goes viral.

"Kinda ruined the mood"

By Hollie Geraghty

2nd May 2023

A Sleep Token gig was interrupted this weekend when an audience member appeared to fart during one of the quietest moments in the alt-metal band’s set.

The anonymous masked UK collective, whose musical styles include Alternative metal, Post-rock metal, Progressive metal and Indie rock/pop, were performing at the Metro Theatre in Sydney, Australia, this Saturday (April 29) when one concertgoer apparently let one rip.

According to fans, the unfortunately timed toot came during the quiet piano section of the band’s track ‘Atlantic’ during a brief vocal interlude.

“Someone ripping a giant fart mid Atlantic in Sydney kinda ruined the mood,” a video clip of the moment was captioned on Facebook, along with a laughing emoji.

“Someone ripping an absolutely SINISTER fart during a quiet bit at a Sleep Token gig is haunting me,” a Twitter user wrote when reposting the video.

“It wasn’t even a subtle creaker or anything. Just a full blown pant burner,” they added.

Some fans also questioned the legitimacy of the flatulence, with one Twitter user replying: “It was actually just some guy making a fart noise, he was right behind me and everyone looked back at him saying “really dude”.”

“That mf sounded real, that’s all I know,” the poster replied, with another arguing they were also there and “it was actually a real fart 100%”.

Los Angels Philharmonic concert disrupted by "loud and full bodied orgasm"

The incident isn’t the first time a live music performance was interrupted by a natural bodily episode this weekend, after a concert-goer had “a loud and full bodied orgasm” during an LA Philharmonic performance on Friday night (April 28).

The incident happened while the orchestra was performing Tchaikovsky’s ‘Symphony No. 5’.

“A woman in the audience had a loud and full bodied orgasm during the symphony's second movement,” tweeted Magnus Fiennes, a composer and music producer who was in attendance. “The orchestra politely carried on. Props to LAPhil (and Pytor Ilyich) for bringing it on.”

Meanwhile, Sleep Token recently announced details of a 2023 ‘Rituals’ North American tour kicking off this autumn.
