PIANIST EVGENY KISSIN SENDS AID EVERY DAY TO ODESA

The following notification from Norman Lebrecht

Message from the Russian-born pianist:

Evgeny Kissin in 2001

"In June 2021 I performed in Odessa, and my visit there became one of the greatest impressions in my life. I was truly astonished by the beauty and hospitality of this amazing city which gave to the world Benno Moiseiwitsch, Nathan Milstein, David Oistrakh, Shura Cherkassky, Emil Gilels and many other great people, musicians and non-musicians.

"Now the people there are on the edge of being destroyed to pebbles. Every night Russian armed forces shell Odessa with numerous kinds of missiles, aiming at ports infrastructure, cultural premises, civil houses and churches. They even bomb Odessa’s Historic Centre which is one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

"They need our help crucially. It’s a question of saving lives, saving a peaceful European city from being destroyed.

"Ukraine catastrophically lacks air defence systems and all kinds of weapons which can protect their cities. And they are needed in Ukraine today! In half a year time there might be no Odessa and nothing to protect. And the moment they ruin Ukraine, other European countries will be in danger as well.

"Please, help Ukraine to defend itself, its people and its beautiful cities! Every day I send money by PayPal to: g.mohnenko@gmail.com; Gennady Mohnenko is a chaplain in the Ukrainian army.

Please, join me, and let’s save Odessa together!"
