American Airlines pilot unleashes on 'selfish' and 'rude' passengers in furious tirade about plane etiquette

by Sadie Whitelocks

An American Airlines pilot has been praised for his impassioned speech about plane etiquette, which quickly went viral after a passenger shared it.

New York-based comedian Anne Leah Maltezos uploaded a video to Instagram on July 26, which gives the unnamed pilot's full public announcement complete with subtitles.

Firstly, the aviator instructs all of the passengers to 'listen' to what the flight attendants have to say, as 'they represent my will in the cockpit or in the cabin... and my will is what matters.'

He then goes on to tell everyone over the intercom to be 'nice' and 'respectful' to each other; something that should be a given, but instead he says he sees 'rude' and 'selfish' travellers time and time again.

Continuing his monologue, he offers some stern advice: 'Do your stuff. Get it out of everybody else's way.

'Put your junk where it belongs. Everybody has paid for a space.'

In terms of navigating personal space, the pilot tells passengers to be considerate to their neighbours.

He says with a continued air of seriousness: 'Don't lean on other people. Don't fall asleep on other people.

'Don't pass out on other people or drool on them, unless you've talked about it and they have a weather-resistant jacket.'

His last comment causes some passengers to snigger but he quickly moves on to the next topic; using cell phones on speaker mode.

He makes it very clear that this is one of his pet hates, stating: 'The social experiment on listening to videos on speaker mode and talking on a cell phone on speaker mode, that is over.

'Over and done in this country.'

Reiterating the point, he adds: 'Nobody wants to hear your video. I know you think it's super sweet and it probably is but it's your business right, so keep it to yourself.'

The pilots instructs all of the passengers to use their 'Airpods... headphones [or] whatever it is' so they do not bother others around them.

'It's just being part of being in a respectful society,' he explains.

Returning to the subject of personal space, the captain asks all of the 'middle seaters' to raise their hands and 'raise them up' high.

When only five people raise their hands, he seemingly gets annoyed as he says the plane is full and the headcount is a clear indicator that 'nobody's listening... fine!'

Offering a dose of humour to his non-compliant audience, he tells the 'middle seaters' that 'you own both armrests... That is my gift to you. Welcome on board our flight.'

To date the Anna's Instagram video has been viewed more than 390,000 times with the majority of viewers applauding the pilot's rant.

One commenter wrote: 'He's not wrong. For him to say this, that means he's fed up with all these childish adults.'

Another viewer revealed that they were one of the flight attendants on the flight and they 'approved this message.'

A fellow flight attendant said they also approved of the pilot's speech, writing: 'As a flight attendant for over 35 years (not for AA)… All I can say is bravo Captain!

'Anyone who doesn't agree with what he said apparently is oblivious to social manners and could care less about being respectful to fellow passengers.

'The things I have seen people do and say is mind boggling. If everyone just followed the golden rule flying would be a breeze.'
